Lariam as a Prophylactic and Anti-Malaria Treatment
Lariam containing the active ingredient Mefloquine is from a classification of medicines known as antimalarials. Larium is used to prevent and treat specific forms of malaria. Malaria is a disease that is caused by parasites known as Plasmodium. Plasmodium enter the bloodstream via mosquito bites, and once inside the body they multiply causing malaria. Lariam works by killing the parasites when they are within red blood cells. As the parasites are attacked this prevents them from reproducing further, therefore preventing and treating malaria – a disease that can be fatal. Although the specific method of action of Lariam is not fully understood, the medication is successful in its purpose.
When to take Lariam
If Lariam is recommended for your travel plans by a doctor you must start taking the medication at least one week (but preferably two or three weeks) prior to entering the malarial region. It is important you buy Lariam in good time prior to your journey. Individuals should continue to take Lariam for the duration of their stay so that if an infected mosquito does bite them there will be medicine within the body to prevent the development of malaria. Lariam should continue to be taken for a four week period after returning from the malarial region to ensure medication is available within the system to kill any remaining parasites that may have entered their body during the stay.
How to take Lariam
Lariam containing Mefloquine come in tablet form. The tablet should be taken once a week on the same specific day each week and ensuring it is taken with plenty of fluids. It is important to make sure Lariam is taken regularly to allow it to fulfil its purpose. It is still advisable to continue to take conventional steps to prevent being bitten such as using mosquito repellent and going to sleep under mosquito nets as this combination will boost your levels of protection.
