The generic medication Propranolol also known by the brand name Inderal is from a classification of drugs known as beta blockers. It is used to treat a number of conditions including heart problems, hypertension (high blood pressure), arrhythmias (fast heart rate), and the symptoms of anxiety. Propranolol tends to reduce the workload undertaken by the heart and blood vessels.
How does Propranolol work?
Propranolol blocks beta adrenergic receptors that receive messages intended for the heart. By reducing these messages the heart will beat at a lower rate and with less rigour. This allows the pressure that the blood is carried at to lower and prevents abnormally quick heart rates known as arrhythmias. These properties of propranolol have also been found to benefit those experiencing distress at the symptoms of anxiety such as a rapid heart rate or trembling.
When taking propranolol by mouth it reaches the bloodstream within approximately thirty minutes and the effects can last up to sixty or ninety minutes. Propranolol can be prescribed in tablet or liquid form to be taken via mouth but also come in capsule form acting as an extended release version. As with all prescription medication you should not take Propranolol or any beta blocker without prior approval and direction from a doctor.
