What is Gabapentin? What is Neurontin?
Gabapentin is a generic medication sometimes marketed under the brand name of Neurontin. Gabapentin belongs to a classification of medications referred to as anticonvulsants. Although initially developed for the treatment of epilepsy, more recently it has been proven to be beneficial in the treatment of neuropathic pain disorders such as fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy and post herpetic neuralgia (after shingles). Gabapentin is also used to treat restless leg syndrome and off label for the treatment of migraines.
How does Gabapentin?
Gabapentin works by stabilising electrical activity in the brain by acting on neurotransmitters released by the brain and spinal cord. Its pain reducing properties are believed to originate from the fact that Gabapentin reduces the release of a neurotransmitter within the body known as glutamate. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter believed to send pain signals from the nerves to the brain. By inhibiting the release of glutamate Gabapentin stops the transmittance of pain signals or messengers to the brain, resulting in a reduction in the feeling of pain experienced by the patient.
How to take Gabapentin?
Gabapentin can come in various forms and doses. You should take this medication as advised by the prescriber.
